7th International Course on Medieval Music Performance of Besalú

OUTREMER: Clerics, Troubadours, Trouvères and the Crusades

In 2018, the Medieval Music Course of Besalú focuses on music connected to the crusades (11th-13th centuries). In its different music courses and workshops the participants will explore the context, composition, and performance of music composed to promote the sacred duty of the crusades, to capture the yearning for the Holy Land, to record the departure of lovers to Outremer, and to censure the whole enterprise. The courses and workshops can be taken individually or combined.

The International Course on Medieval Music Performance offers singers, instrumentalists, musicologists, philologists, and medievalists in general the possibility to study monophonic and polyphonic repertoires composed from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The course masterfully combines rigorous musicological, philological, and historical research with a vibrant reconstruction of performance practice.

The main objectives are:

  • The study of different repertoires composed between 1100 and 1300.
  • A philological and historical study of the sources.
  • The placement of the repertoires in the cultural and political life of the period, and an exploration of their creators and audience.
  • The interpretation of the different music notational systems that record the repertoires.
  • The study of a historically-informed ways of singing and playing musical instruments that are appropriate for different repertoires. This includes vocal production, articulation, diction, tuning, and ornamentation.
  • The development of ensemble techniques appropriate to the performance of each repertoire.
  • The production of a concert for the closing of the course (Voices & Instruments Course).
